Designed by the Swiss design firm Herzog & de Meuron to welcome 42,000 spectators, the New Bordeaux stadium is elegantly light, with a rectangular roof sloping inward and supported by 644 round steel columns up to 37 metres tall. The construction project required:
“The new Bordeaux stadium shows that steel is an endless recyclable material that offers more technical, esthetic and innovative possibilities than concrete thanks to its resistance and its weight”, said Hervé Bourrier, CEO of ArcelorMittal France.

An iconic display for ArcelorMittal
The new Bordeaux stadium features a structure that is unique in France, made of steel, renowned for its extreme lightness. It is the first time in France that a stadium has been built using such a large proportion of steel.
The use of steel in the structure of the New Bordeaux Stadium replaces the traditional and almost exclusive use of concrete and enables a significant reduction in the weight of the building. The weight saving results in a reduction of foundations, enabling time and cost savings.
“With concrete, we couldn’t have made this stadium as spectacular or iconic. German tour operators want to include the stadium in their offer to promote Bordeaux”, declared Dominique Fondacci, president of Stade Bordeaux Atlantique, the company that builds the new stadium.
