The Jewel of Singapore finally opens

All eyes were on Singapore Changi Airport on 17 April 2019. The world’s best airport unveiled its latest offering, known as Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel). Jewel is a new iconic landmark, which features leisure attractions, over 280 retail stores and F&B eateries, a hotel, an indoor Forest Valley and the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. ArcelorMittal is proud to have contributed to the project, with 8,000 tonnes of HISTAR® beams 460 used to build the foundations of Jewel.

A new iconic project featuring Luxembourgish steel

ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products provided 31 metre-long king post piles in HISTAR® 460 via ArcelorMittal International Singapore to build the foundations of Jewel using the top-down method. These were the longest beams we ever delivered to Singapore.

What is the top-down method?

The top-down method is a composite method to build foundations. King post piles are put in the ground and while digging around them, slabs of concrete are put on top of them. At the same time, construction of the top structure starts. When arriving at the bottom, concrete is put around the king post piles for fire resistance. When the foundations of the building are completed, the building is already partially built, resulting in reduced construction time for the contractor.

The top-down method using our steel sections offers many advantages:

  • Weight saving of 20% compared to grade S355M
  • Smallest hole to drill in the soil

A new travel and leisure experience in Singapore

Named the world's best airport every year since 2013, Singapore Changi Airport is also one of the world's busiest airports with over 65 million passengers in 2018.

Designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, Jewel aims to bring a new travel and leisure experience to the passengers of the airport. With a total gross floor area of 135,700 sqm, Jewel features a dome-shaped facade made of glass and steel. Inside, visitors will find a range of facilities including gardens and attractions, over 280 retail and dining options, a hotel and airport facilities, all under one roof. Seamlessly connected to Terminal 1 and linked to Terminals 2 and 3 via pedestrian bridges, Jewel will have plenty of offerings to target both travellers and local residents alike.
