The first steel structure with low CO2 emissions is built in Switzerland thanks to XCarb® recycled and renewably produced

Reducing environmental impact: this is the goal that our client Morand Constructions Métalliques decided to follow when purchasing XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for a major project in Rossens, Switzerland. The future Dimab car dealership will be the biggest BMW and MINI showroom in Switzerland and the country’s first steel structure to use low CO2 emissions steel.

We discovered XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, ArcelorMittal’s low-carbon emissions offer, a little over a year ago," explains Jean-François Suchet, Managing Director of Morand Constructions Métalliques. “Offering it to our customers was an obvious choice and is part of our environmental and sustainable development policy. Indeed, even if it has a slight extra cost of 2 to 4%, we want to introduce this product which has the same properties as traditional steel but is made from 100% of steel scrap, using 100% renewable electricity.”


The BMW showroom in Rossens has been designed to be as respectful to the environment as possible, from its design to the daily consumption of renewable electricity, thanks to photovoltaic panels installed on the façade and solar panels on the roof.

The XCarb® recycled and renewably produced beams were delivered from our steel mills in Luxembourg to Morand Constructions Métalliques at the beginning of July. After the manufacturing of the framework in their workshop, they started the installation in early August.

Scrap and renewable energy: the levers of low CO2 steel

To produce XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, ArcelorMittal uses up to 100% scrap and renewable electricity coming from renewable sources such as solar and wind power.

ArcelorMittal estimates that XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel has a carbon footprint as low as 0.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel product when the metallics are 100% scrap, which is certified by a published Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).


We pass the CO2 savings of our investments to our customers

The ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiatives also include XCarb® green steel certificates which are specifically designed for ArcelorMittal’s steel products made from iron ore in a blast furnace. They are based on real CO2 savings as well as wider initiatives which reduce ArcelorMittal’s carbon footprint.

We can add up these important CO2 savings and then pass them onto our customers in the form of a certificate, which has been verified by an independent auditor.
