The pyrolysis of coal, at high temperature and without air, produces coke and gas (coke oven gas). This gas contains benzene, toluene and xylenes [BTX]. These chemical components are extracted from the coke oven gas thanks to a specific washing oil in a counter-flow column. When the washing oil is charged in BTX and other oils, then it is heated and stripped in a second column. Steam and different oils (benzole, naphthalene…) in gaseous phase leave the stripping column and are separated and condensed in a fractionating column. Benzene, toluene and xylenes are separated and gathered to constitute a liquid called benzole or light oils. Average composition: ca. 70-80% benzene, ca. 10-15% toluene, ca. 5% xylenes.
