ArcelorMittal is strengthening its partnership with Vestas through the supply of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates for Vattenfall’s new Clashindarroch II onshore wind farm in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Developed close to the existing Clashindarroch site, the new wind farm will comprise 14 turbines with a total installed capacity of up to 63 MW, enough to deliver clean electricity to around 61,000 UK households each year.
Our heavy plates will play a key role in the project. All 14 towers of the wind farm will be manufactured using our low carbon-emissions heavy plates. As part of our commitment to low‑carbon steelmaking, we will supply almost 4Kt of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced heavy plates, based on slabs made with a minimum of 95% high quality scrap and 100% renewable electricity. They have a 66 percent lower carbon footprint than heavy plates made via the conventional blast furnace route, helping wind developers lower the embedded emissions of their assets from the outset.
Clashindarroch II is the first onshore wind project to incorporate a significant volume of low carbon-emissions steel. It reflects ArcelorMittal’s broader ambition to decarbonise value chains and support the expansion of renewable energy. By combining advanced steel expertise with a clear pathway to lower emissions, we are helping to deliver the infrastructure required for a fossil-free future.
Preparatory works began in autumn 2025; the main construction phase will follow in spring 2026. The first power is targeted for summer 2027.
