  The intelligent construction choice: ArcelorMittal presents Steligence® at BAU 2019


Munich, 20 December 2018 – ArcelorMittal will be showcasing a number of innovations with steel at BAU from 14 to 19 January 2019. At the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems, the global leading steel producer will place the focus on the new and radical concept of Steligence® for building with steel. Visitors will also be able to see the advantages of the steel construction method in a virtual 3D world at booth B2.318. A virtual building and a bridge made of various steel products convey some exciting visual impressions.

“With Steligence®, we are demonstrating that using the best available technology in steel production and the modular application of steel components in buildings makes it possible to achieve efficiency gains in the planning, design, construction costs and flexibility of buildings compared to conventional construction methods,” says Olivier Vassart, CEO Steligence®.

Steligence® also provides architects and planners with the tools and knowledge for assessing the complete lifecycle of their future buildings including recyclability and ultimately the reusability of a structure and its components; all this at a really early stage of the planning and design process.

Modern planning and execution enables more cost-efficient and sustainable buildings

Innovative steels such as Histar® are characterised by higher strength, so they save on weight, fabrication costs and since they are readily available can be used quickly and flexibly. High-strength steel grades are already used as standard in skyscrapers in the USA and UK. In Germany, however, the potential for using high-strength steels is still high.

Advantages due to recycling and environmental protection, such as using 100% steel scrap as a raw material and reduced CO2 values in use, also advocate high-strength steel grades.

Construction with steel also ensures faster building progress with a lower environmental impact. The sections known as Angelina™ with integrated openings for cables trays and ventilation pipes enable a better ratio between usable area and enclosed space, thus permitting a lower construction height. This means a lower volume to be heated and consequently better energy efficiency. Composite floors such as Cofraplus® 220 are distinguished by quick and easy installation; they score due to reduced weight, variety of customised surface coatings like Granite® Silky Shine which are tough, durable and environmentally friendly because they are free of heavy metals. Moreover, façade claddings can be replaced individually during renovation work, eliminating the need to take down an entire row of panels or exterior wall. ArcelorMittal also presents Magnelis®, an exceptional metallic coating which provides a breakthrough in corrosion protection, suitable for sub structures of facades and purlins for example.

Bridges: Short construction times due to high degree of pre-assembly

The high requirement for renovating structures in the road and rail network continues to emphasise the need for durable structures. At BAU 2019, ArcelorMittal will be demonstrating the environmentally friendly and cost-effective possibilities offered by steel bridges for constructing infrastructure innovatively and durably.

With short construction times, high-strength products such as Histar® set themselves apart from other materials due to the high degree of pre-assembly in the beams. Bridge abutments made of sheet piles also shorten construction times, which leads to a reduction of overall external costs of around 15%. The small footprint is an advantage in tight construction site conditions and avoids traffic obstructions. In the 3D video “Our steel builds bridges”, the use of high-strength steel in composite prefabricated beams demonstrates the many possibilities of innovative production processes.

With its holistic approach to building, Steligence® focuses on all aspects of steel construction and considers them as part of the whole. Steligence® also points, therefore, to the need for improving dialogue and collaboration between the various disciplines of architecture and engineering.
