ArcelorMittal at wire 2022 in Düsseldorf

Initiatives for a successful future

Düsseldorf, 21 June 2022 – ArcelorMittal is present at the wire 2022 fair in Düsseldorf from 20 to 24 June. The group will be present with ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products and Wire Solutions at booth D32 in hall 12. ArcelorMittal is fully focused on its initiatives for a successful future of steel products and solutions. This includes sustainable steelmaking with environmental friendly products, new entities to strengthen customer services as well as customer-oriented solutions for digitalisation.

ResponsibleSteel™

Where do raw materials come from? How are they mined? Are workers' rights as well as health and safety regulations respected? Does the company use resources responsibly? Does it strive to avoid emissions and waste? These and other issues should be considered when a company manufactures and sells products. For ArcelorMittal it is a matter of course. “Responsible production techniques and high ethical and business standards are becoming increasingly important to our customers, and ultimately to their customers and consumers”, says Tapas Rajderkar, Chief Marketing Officer at ArcelorMittal Europe – Long Products. “We want to get to a point where steel users and purchasers have total confidence in their choices.”

In order to meet these requirements, ArcelorMittal submits to the standards of the Responsible Steel™ certification program. ResponsibleSteel™ is the steel industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification initiative. This is an international, non-profit multi-stakeholder membership organisation. By creating a multi-stakeholder forum to build trust and achieve consensus, ResponsibleSteel™ aims to enhance the responsible sourcing, production, use and recycling of steel through the development of standards, certification, and related tools.

How seriously the company takes these requirements is shown by the results that have been achieved so far. In July 2021 ArcelorMittal announced the first sites certified:  ArcelorMittal Belgium (Geel, Genk, Gent and Liège), Luxembourg (Belval, Differdange and Rodange), Germany (Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt), Spain (Asturias, Etxebarri, Lesaka and Sagunto) and France (Fos-sur-Mer, Saint Chély d’Apcher). “We intend to intensify the ResponsibleSteel™ certification of our plants and our two Long Products plants Duisburg and Warsaw are already in the pipeline for the certification audits”, explains Rajderkar.

Carbon neutral by 2050

This development fits in well with the Group's target to become carbon neutral by 2050 worldwide and -35% by 2030 in Europe. This includes large projects in Europe, with H2H Hamburg being the flagship project in Germany to produce first green sponge iron as early as 2025 – all project implementations are subject to public funding, applications have been made.

But the ResponsibleSteel™ certifications also cover a whole range of other topics – among others social, environmental and governance management systems, human and labour rights, local communities and biodiversity. Each of the twelve ResponsibleSteel principles is the basis for a number of criteria and underlying requirements. Conformity with the ResponsibleSteel Standard is audited at the level of the requirements specified for each criterion.

Investing in the future

These efforts require an enormous investment. On the one hand, it's about producing sustainably. But it's also about developing better products and more efficient processes and even safer working conditions. ArcelorMittal’s first pillar of sustainable development is Health and Safety of People, because ArcelorMittal is constantly preoccupied by the health and safety of its employees and of steel users in general.

In addition and fully aligned with the strategy to grow in the DownStream and UpStream activities ArcelorMittal took the opportunity to integrate new entities in its perimeter.

Furthermore there are initiatives to simplify customer service via NETSTEEL, a one-way communication with customers and a whole series of digitalisation initiatives. Machine learning methods are used to analyse and evaluate process data broken down to the smallest product segments, and to use and automatically implement them for process improvements.

"ArcelorMittal shows that it is able to react quickly and courageously to regional and global changes and thus make itself fit for the future. This benefits the environment, people and ultimately the entire planet", concludes Rajderkar.
