An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a comprehensive, internationally harmonised report that details the life cycle analysis of a product. They are intended to inform prescribers and consumers on the environmental impact of the product and to ease the comparison between products.
EPDs are available for six products which are manufactured via the Blast Furnace route and are eligible for XCarb® green steel certificates.
Three EPDs for Flat Products are available with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced.
The EPDs are reviewed by The Institut Bauen und Umwelt e. V. (IBU) and available on their platform: https://ibu-epd.com/en/
All Flat Products related EPDs can be found here.
Thanks to XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, we are able to offer Long Products steels produced with a CO2 footprint as low as 0.33 per tonne of sections and merchant bars.
The new EcoSheetPile™ Plus brand, essential part of the XCarb™ recycled and renewably produced initiative, is thus based on the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) route using 100% recycled material and is additionally using 100% renewable electricity. This allows the production of the new EcoSheetPile™ Plus range with a further reduced carbon footprint; the Global Warming Potential (GWP A1-A3) is only 370 kg CO2-eq. per tonne of steel sheet pile, approximately 30% less then the EcoSheetPile™ range, and much more when compared with the predominant conventional steelmaking*. It comes also with a ‘Guarantee of Origin’ certifying the renewable sources for the electricity, audited by an external third party.
The EPD provides a life-cycle assessment detailing the complete environmental footprint of reinforcing steel in bars sold under ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced brand. It certifies for our XCarb® rebars a global warming potential of 300 kg CO2 per tonne of steel of finished steel, which is far below the average carbon footprint of the rebars available on the market.
This EPD is valid for XCarb® recycled and renewably produced reinforcing steels in bars and coils covering various steel grades and produced with EAF, more than 95% scrap and a 100% certified supply of renewable electricity, from ArcelorMittal Warsaw or from ArcelorMittal Hamburg.
It certifies for our XCarb® products, rebars in bars and coils - wire rod mesh, a global warming potential of 300 kg CO2 per tonne of finished steel products.
Reinforcing steel in bars and coils, including standard rebars, special rebars – Krybar®, rock bolt and tie bars, threaded bars and steel rod for mesh, covers carbon steel for geotechnical use and the reinforcement of concrete.
