ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia and Tankeros: a success story of innovation and efficiency

27 May 2024

Tankeros, a leader in the manufacture of modular water storage tanks, has found in ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia a key partner to enhance its processes and products. Through the use of high-strength coated steels, this partnership has enabled Tankeros to take its quality and efficiency to the next level, further strengthening its position in the market.

Innovation and quality in every step

Tankeros manufactures its atmospheric water tanks with flat steel products, which are subsequently curved and punched to form the components of the tank shell. These tanks are usually installed outdoors, which, combined with the effect of the water they contain, makes corrosion resistance a critical factor.

To address these challenges, ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia proposed the use of Magnelis®, ArcelorMittal’s steel with a zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy coating that provides outstanding corrosion resistance. This innovation has enabled Tankeros to eliminate the post-galvanising process, thus reducing operating costs while improving the durability of their tanks.

Moreover, for tanks requiring thicker material the partners have introduced the use of the high-strength structural steel grade S390GD, which enables Tankeros to manufacture stronger tanks. This solution is complemented with the supply of Z-purlins, made of Magnelis® and specifically tailored to meet the needs of Tankeros.

Optimised stock management

The partnership includes optimised stock management to ensure the constant availability of material and short delivery times. This is crucial for Tankeros, as they need regular and agile supplies to avoid any disruption in their production process.

"Close collaboration with ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia has been essential in order to develop tailor-made solutions. Thanks to their ongoing support and to innovations with materials such as Magnelis®, we have optimised our processes and are able to offer our customers higher-quality and more durable products", commented Jaime Sánchez, head of Supply Chain and Process Improvement at Tankeros.

Focus on sustainability

Tankeros, committed to leading their sector in terms of sustainability and to supporting their customers in achieving the certification of their facilities through the use of more sustainable products, has already placed its first order for XCarb® steel coils with Magnelis® coating. This step further reinforces their commitment to offering solutions designed to the highest environmental standards.

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using a high proportion of recycled steel scrap and 100% renewable electricity. This process reduces CO2 emissions by 65% compared with steel produced through the conventional blast furnace route, thus providing a more sustainable steel with reduced environmental impact.

The partnership between ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia and Tankeros is a clear example of how close collaboration, built on trust, can lead to outstanding results.

ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia is committed to offering innovative, customised solutions, tailored to the specific requirements of its customers, thus helping them to achieve their goals in terms of quality and sustainability.
