ArcelorMittal Europe and Corinth Pipeworks sign agreement to produce steel pipes with reduced CO2 impact

13 May 2024

ArcelorMittal Europe today announces it has signed an agreement with Corinth Pipeworks (CPW) under which its Flat Products business supplies hot-rolled coils to CPW to produce steel pipes for an offshore oil and gas field development project in the North Sea. The agreement will also see CPW purchase ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® green steel certificates, which enable steel consumers to report savings in their Scope 3 emissions from verified CO2 emissions reductions achieved during the steelmaking process.

ArcelorMittal Europe’s steel will be used by CPW to manufacture and supply 39km of 16.1-inch High Frequency Welded (HFW) steel pipes for subsea Pipe-In-Pipe application. The CO2 reductions for the XCarb® green steel certificates result from capturing hydrogen-rich waste gases during the steelmaking process and re-injecting them into the blast furnace, hence partially replacing the use of fossil fuel. These CO2 reductions are independently verified by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a leading independent assurance provider, and attributed to the hot-rolled coils purchased by CPW. The use of XCarb® green steel certificates for this project will reduce the CO2 impact of the hot-rolled coils by up to 95%1.

Speaking about the partnership between ArcelorMittal and CPW, Laurent Plasman, CMO Industry at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products, said: “Collaborations to decarbonise the supply chain are a vital part of the energy transition. Our XCarb® certificates represent significant CO2 reductions in steel production processes, and we are immensely proud to work with our long-term partner CPW to reduce the CO2 impact of the steel being used in this project.”

Ilias Bekiros, General Manager of Corinth Pipeworks, commented: “Collaborations that assist our efforts to reduce carbon emissions are critical on the route to a sustainable future for all. Steel has a significant contribution to the environmental footprint of our products, and collaborating with established companies sharing the same values is key to advancing our progress in sustainable solutions.”
