Companies in Europe and America join forces to build the world's first hotel containing low carbon-emissions steel structures

28 May 2024
  • SUALSA, WTH Corp (subsidiary of Grupo La Chapelle) and ArcelorMittal are working together on the iconic TRYP by Wyndham Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, the first hotel in the world to contain significant quantities of low carbon-emissions steel.
  • The hotel is being built using XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel structures.
  • Construction began on 22 April 2024, with the low carbon-emissions steel structures due to arrive in the Dominican Republic in July 2024.

A new hotel is being built in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, using low carbon-emissions steel. Wide-flange beams made with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, provided by ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company, and transformed by the Spanish steel processor SUALSA, will be used by World Trade Holding Corp (WTH Corp).

The XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel structures have been made in ArcelorMittal Olaberria, Spain from 100% recycled steel scrap, using 100% renewable electricity in an Electric Arc Furnace 1. This reduces embedded CO2 by up to 70 percent (depending on the type of steel product used) compared with conventionally produced steel, while maintaining the same quality standards. The structures are currently being delivered by ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia to the steel processor Sualsa.

The new complex will form part of the world's largest hotel company, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, under its TRYP brand. The hotel has been designed to the highest sustainability standards and represents an investment of more than US$16m, shared between Banco BHD León and BIO Investment Group SAS, who are both strongly committed to joining forces in projects contributing to environmental protection, not only in the Dominican Republic, but worldwide. The complex will have 97 rooms and a commercial area of 2,200 square meters, and will open from the end of 2025.

Eng. Nigel La Chapelle, Chairman of WTH and BIO Investment Group, said: “This pioneering project not only represents a milestone in the history of the hotel industry, but also reflects our commitment to the environment. Using low carbon-emissions steel significantly reduces the carbon footprint and fosters the conservation of natural resources. Our hotel will not only be an exceptional destination for its guests, but also a model to be followed in the search for more sustainable solutions and for the construction industry n. From the choice of the materials to its design and operation, every aspect of this project has been carefully studied to maximise its positive environmental impact and to strengthen a powerful message: it is possible to build a better future if we have the courage to ‘dream big’ and the commitment to act with determination.”

Louis Alicea, Senior Director of Sales and Franchise Development at Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, said: “As the world's leading hospitality company, we are uniquely positioned to create a significant positive impact on the world while fulfilling our mission of making hotel travel possible for everyone. We are incredibly proud to work with WTH and BIO. Our goal is to do business in a way that brings pride to our team members, owners and guests".

Jorge Álvarez, CEO of the SUALSA family group, said: "Since 1981 we have been involved in projects in different countries, and it is very exciting to be part of the beginning of the change of consciousness in the new manufacture of steel structures, demonstrating that everything can be done in a more sustainable way. XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, provides us with the same quality, mechanical and resistance characteristics as conventionally manufactured A992 grade steel. For the TRYP by Wyndham Punta Cana, a "super structure" made of steel structures has been designed using the latest 3D software technology, ensuring it is able to withstand seismic activity and hurricanes that could take place in the area. We will manufacture the structure in Spain, under strict quality controls, and it will be transported in sea containers. At the end of July, the prefabricated and ready-to-bolt material will be received in the Dominican Republic, a condition that will considerably reduce construction times and the generation of waste on site. This new way of proceeding will contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint, both for this hotel and for SUALSA's future projects.

Cédric Bouzar, CEO, ArcelorMittal Downstream Solutions said: “We are proud when partners like SUALSA, WTH and BIO choose our low-carbon emissions steel to reduce the carbon footprint of their projects This project is particularly exciting as it is the first hotel to contain XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel structures, setting a high standard for the rest of the industry to follow when reducing their supply chain emissions”.

XCarb® brings together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon neutral steel.
