A new hotel is being built in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, using low carbon-emissions steel. Wide-flange beams made with XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, provided by ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading steel and mining company, and transformed by the Spanish steel processor SUALSA, will be used by World Trade Holding Corp (WTH Corp).
The XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel structures have been made in ArcelorMittal Olaberria, Spain from 100% recycled steel scrap, using 100% renewable electricity in an Electric Arc Furnace 1. This reduces embedded CO2 by up to 70 percent (depending on the type of steel product used) compared with conventionally produced steel, while maintaining the same quality standards. The structures are currently being delivered by ArcelorMittal Distribution Iberia to the steel processor Sualsa.
The new complex will form part of the world's largest hotel company, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, under its TRYP brand. The hotel has been designed to the highest sustainability standards and represents an investment of more than US$16m, shared between Banco BHD León and BIO Investment Group SAS, who are both strongly committed to joining forces in projects contributing to environmental protection, not only in the Dominican Republic, but worldwide. The complex will have 97 rooms and a commercial area of 2,200 square meters, and will open from the end of 2025.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, provides us with the same quality, mechanical and resistance characteristics as conventionally manufactured A992 grade steel. For the TRYP by Wyndham Punta Cana, a "super structure" made of steel structures has been designed using the latest 3D software technology, ensuring it is able to withstand seismic activity and hurricanes that could take place in the area. We will manufacture the structure in Spain, under strict quality controls, and it will be transported in sea containers. At the end of July, the prefabricated and ready-to-bolt material will be received in the Dominican Republic, a condition that will considerably reduce construction times and the generation of waste on site. This new way of proceeding will contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint, both for this hotel and for SUALSA's future projects.
