ArcelorMittal has been selected by the Monnaie de Paris to supply XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for the production of Euro 1, 2 and 5 cent coins.
The project involves the supply of XCarb® specific cold-rolled steel produced by ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The material is processed through the ArcelorMittal Steel Service Centre in Ottmarsheim, France, which performs the slitting operations requiredto meet the specific requirements of coin manufacturing.
“Ottmarsheim site is specialised in slitting operations and benefits from strong adaptability, production flexibility and a strategic connection to the Rhine, making it particularly well suited for the processing of decarbonised steel solutions,” says Antoine Aygalenq, site manager.
This project marks a significant milestone for both ArcelorMittal and the Monnaie de Paris as it is the first time low carbon-emissions steel will be used to produce Euro cent coins. The collaboration is the result of nearly ten years of partnership and technical exchanges between the two companies, reflecting a shared commitment to innovation and the continuous evolution of coin production.
The Monnaie de Paris, the French institution responsible for manufacturing France's euro coins and producing currency on behalf of the French & European Central Bank, currently purchases 800 tonnes of XCarb® steel to produce the euro cent coins. The introduction of XCarb® steel into this process represents a new chapter in the long history of coin production.
While produced by the Monnaie de Paris, euro coins circulate throughout the euro area, giving this collaboration a broader European dimension. The selection of European cold rolled low carbon-emissions steel reflects the ”Made in Europe” approach and highlights the capability of ArcelorMittal's low-carbon steel solutions to meet the demanding requirements of coin manufacturing.
"This partnership perfectly supports the ambitions of our Ambition 2027 strategy, in which the energy transition and the reduction of our carbon footprint play a central role. By integrating ArcelorMittal XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel into the production of the euro cent coins, we are taking another concrete step towards our objective of reducing our carbon emissions by 50% while supporting a more circular approach to coin production," stresses Aïcha Nowak, Procurement Director at Monnaie de Paris.
XCarb® recycled and renewably produced cold rolled steel ensure up to 68% lower CO₂e emissions compared to conventional steel produced in blast furnaces, with an estimated carbon footprint of around 800 kg CO₂e per tonne versus approximately 2,500 kg CO₂e per tonne.
For ArcelorMittal, this partnership further expands the range of applications for XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel and showcases the role that innovative steel solutions can play in supporting customers across diverse sectors.
By combining technical expertise, long-term collaboration and material innovation, ArcelorMittal and the Monnaie de Paris are opening a new chapter for one of Europe's most iconic everyday products: the euro cent coin.
