Our roadmap features five groupings of actions and initiatives (‘levers’) that act as stepping stones towards our ambition to achieve net zero by 2050:

Transforming our steelmaking operations
- Transitioning steelmaking assets to EAF
Building state-of-the-art EAFs allows us to produce steel with significantly lower direct emissions by increasing the use of scrap and other lower-carbon metallic inputs, such as DRI and hot briquetted iron (HBI), which can be produced using natural gas instead of coal.
- Securing high-grade iron and metallics
For secondary steel production, securing high-quality scrap is critical. And, a reliable supply of affordable, high-quality metallic inputs is also essential for decarbonising primary steel production, to scale up DRI production and accelerate the transition to DRI–EAF steelmaking.
- Building readiness for breakthrough technologies
While increasing our percentage of EAF capacity and production helps reduce carbon emissions, iron-making must also decarbonise for the steel industry to achieve net zero. We continue to invest in the development and testing of technologies that are expected to play a critical role in the long-term decarbonisation of iron and steelmaking - including hydrogen utilisation, carbon capture utilisation and storage, and electrolysis-based ironmaking.
