Wiederholt relies on CO2-reduced steel from ArcelorMittal

11 July 2024

Wiederholt, a leading producer of precision steel tubes, and Europe's largest steel producer ArcelorMittal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to use CO2-reduced steel in production. The partnership marks a significant step towards a more sustainable future for both companies, which have been working together for several decades.

ArcelorMittal has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions in Europe by 35 percent by 2030 and reaching net-zero globally by 2050. At the same time, Wiederholt has committed to becoming carbon neutral in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

As part of the partnership, Wiederholt intends to source hot-rolled steel from ArcelorMittal with CO2 savings of up to 65 percent compared to traditional production methods. The CO2 reduction will be achieved through "XCarb® green steel certificates" and steel with the "XCarb® recycled and renewably produced" label. At least 75 percent recycled scrap is used in the production of this steel, which is melted down in an electric arc furnace using renewable energy. The CO2 savings that Wiederholt can pass on to its customers are verified by environmental product declarations (EPDs).

Wiederholt is a leader in the production of precision steel tubes, which are mainly used in the automotive industry, including shock absorbers, camshafts, steering parts, cardan shafts and stabilizers.

Jochen Grünewald, Managing Director of ArcelorMittal Commercial Germany, comments: "Our product offering is tailored to the very specific requirements of Wiederholt's precision tube. This applies to the product properties and to the entire supply chain. To ensure that the product remains sustainable, we want to use XCarb® products for Wiederholt's end uses. The first end users have already expressed interest in reduced-emission steel."

Uwe Seiger, Purchasing Manager at Wiederholt, adds: "The decision to use CO2-reduced steel from ArcelorMittal underlines our commitment to sustainability. We see great potential for low-carbon steel in the coming years and are preparing to be able to offer these products to our customers."
