ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products’ Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for structural hollow sections

20 November 2023

We are proud to announce the latest release of our Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for structural hollow sections made of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products. EPDs are based on a Life Cycle Assessment, follow the ISO and EN standards and are widely used in the construction sector.

"With the introduction of this cutting-edge Environmental Product Declaration, our customers gain direct and transparent access to the environmental profile of the products they purchase. Our structural hollow sections produced using XCarb hot rolled coils guarantee a remarkably low CO2 footprint of just 646 kilograms per tonne of steel tubes, a reduction of emissions of up to 75% when compared to the conventional steelmaking process," highlights Adrian Alecu, the Head of Strategy and Business Development at ArcelorMittal Europe – Tubular Products.

As the industry experiences a surging demand from customers and end-users for environmentally conscious and sustainable alternatives, this transparent reporting will play a major role in curbing the carbon footprint of construction projects and transitioning the industry towards more sustainable and efficient practices."

Our cold-formed structural hollow sections made with XCarb® steel are manufactured in ArcelorMittal Legutio using 100% renewable electricity in the production of tubes. They are made of low carbon emissions hot rolled coils from ArcelorMittal Sestao, produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using a minimum of 75% scrap and 100% renewable electricity.

Structural hollow sections are highly versatile products that can be used as structural elements in various applications, including agricultural equipment, cranes, buildings, pavilions, stadiums, civil and mechanical engineering, and other sectors such as renewable energy installations. With the use of structural hollow sections made of XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel, our customers can significantly decrease the carbon footprint of their sourced material (Scope 3 emissions).
