Cable armouring solutions now available in low carbon-emissions steel

3 October 2023

We have met Birgit Lang in charge of global sales for cable armouring wire within WireSolutions.

Birgit Lang is senior sales manager for steel wire and cable armouring within WireSolutions.

Birgit has over 25 years international sales and marketing experience within the steel manufacturing sector. And is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She joined ArcelorMittal in 1996.

As a sales manager, how did you welcome XCarb® recycled and renewably produced availability for cable armouring wire?

I am proud to be part of an organisation that has clearly defined a roadmap towards carbon neutral steel.

The steel wire portfolio in XCarb® recycled and renewably produced is the first step in the green transition to zero emissions products, which is everyone’s top priority today. Our customers in the energy sector (onshore and offshore) are moving quickly to provide product solutions to reduce CO2 emissions, either on their own initiative or on behalf of the end customers.

With XCarb® recycled and renewably produced, we can meet the demand for low carbon steel grades that enable our customers to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, particularly for large-scale power cable projects.

How popular is XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel on the market?

Demand is growing in the Nordic countries. With environmental product declarations (EPDs) and life cycle analyses (LCAs) as supporting documentation, XCarb® recycled and renewably produced is a solution warmly welcomed by our steel wire customers. Particularly with the 2030 milestone looming, tangible and well-documented solutions are needed in the green transition.

You have been selling XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel for six months already. What is the little fact you like to highlight?

A growing awareness that steel is highly recyclable, that we re-use steel as a resource again and again, which is good for the planet and green innovation.

What are the next steps you see for XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel?

With increasing public requirements for documentation (EPDs, third-party validations) and reporting on CO2 emissions, our portfolio of wire products in XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel has great market potential.  The development and implementation of environmentally friendly production technologies is moving fast! I am very excited about expanding our offering to cover future demand for medium and even high carbon steel wire, so that ArcelorMittal becomes a sustainable supplier of choice.

Low-carbon, galvanised steel wire for cable armouring solutions

ArcelorMittal is changing the wire solutions industry and sustainability standards globally. We are using our research, development, production and logistics expertise to challenge the ways in which we do things. These challenges involve looking at the ways we source and process raw and recycled materials, and how we package and distribute our wire products.

From our state-of-the-art production facilities across Europe, ArcelorMittal manufactures and supplies galvanised round steel wire to cable armouring manufacturers. WireSolutions galvanised steel wire is used in cable armouring for the aerospace, defence, power, energy, telecommunications and transportation sectors. Now thanks to the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range, our steel wire helps reduce the CO2 footprint of a wide range of projects in these markets.

More about our cable armouring wire solution

XCarb® towards carbon neutral steel

Our planet is at a crossroad and our future depends on how we act today.

Decarbonisation is the most important aspect of ArcelorMittal’s long-term strategy. At ArcelorMittal, we are aligning with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal by committing to reduce CO2 emissions globally by 25 percent by 2030 and by 35 percent in our European operations. Our long-term goal is to be net-zero by 2050.

It has been two years since ArcelorMittal launched XCarb®, our brand for all activities that bring us a step closer towards carbon-neutral steel. Our customers can buy XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel produced in an electric arc furnace (EAF), using scrap and 100% renewable electricity.

XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel is now available for the full range of low carbon cable armouring wire. ArcelorMittal estimates that the CO2 reduction can be as low as 600-900kg CO2 per tonne of steel, compared to 1,5 tonne of CO2 emissions (average downstream CO2 emissions for this range of product).
