European Year of Rail: ArcelorMittal at the forefront of the rail industry

ArcelorMittal is the world's largest steel and mining company and leads in the production of rails. Our presence in Europe, Asia, Africa and America allows us to be present in all the key steel markets, including developed economies and emerging countries. Thanks to our efforts in research and development, we continually look for technological advances improving the way we manufacture rails with less impact on the environment, in line with the Company’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Meeting the rail market’s need

ArcelorMittal has four rail production facilities in Europe, providing local customer support. We offer a wide portfolio of solutions for railways, subways, tramways, light-rail tracks, crossings, crane rails, and rail components.

ArcelorMittal is fully committed to the quality and reliability of our products, which has earned us the full confidence and trust of our customers. Our many decades of experience, combined with our high level of technology, and continued and dynamic improvement in our facilities and processes, allow us to achieve complete customer satisfaction and anticipate future needs in the rail market.

A large product range supplied worldwide

Our production has experienced significant growth in the all railway markets: high speed, metro, heavy haulurban transportport operation. Of course, an adequate product range is essential in order to meet customer needs. ArcelorMittal has one of the largest product range offers in the market with the best quality and the best service conditions.

Our rails and accessories are supplied worldwide, and we have contributed to large high-speed infrastructure projects all around the world. We also provided rails for the most important urban infrastructure projects:

  • Réseau Express Metropolitan (REM) in Montreal, Canada
  • Line 7 of the Manila Metro Rail Transit, Philippines
  • the first phase of Kaohsiung’s Light Rail System (LRS), Taiwan
  • Sydney Metro, Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure
  • Lines 4,5 and 6 of the Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia
  • Medellín Metro, Colombia
  • the Northern Line Extension in London and many other projects worldwide

Leader in R&D

Led by our global research and development teams, and supported throughout every facet of the business, we are the market leader in innovation. Most of our successes follow a 'process driven product development' principle. This commitment to innovation extends beyond new products and processes to encompass how we can positively impact the life of people all over the world.

The need for fast and reliable transport has encouraged R&D in this sector, making it possible to overcome challenges unimaginable a few years ago. ArcelorMittal, in its continuous development, has reinforced this permanent evolution in the rail sector with improvements of its product range and bringing new rail products with tailored properties.

To satisfy customers’ ever-increasing requirements, ArcelorMittal has a dedicated R&D rail unit with pilot plants and different prototyping facilities. The rail excellence centre includes among others ultimate testing equipment to evaluate the in-use performance of rails at real scale, avoiding expensive and long test track and a welding plant to validate weldability both for the actual grades and for the last products developed.

We are actively involved in designing new rail-based applications that meet the changing needs of the predictive maintenance of the infrastructure. Examples of this are track monitoring sensors and new rail noise mitigation solutions which directly impact passenger experience.

Carbon neutral by 2050

ArcelorMittal Europe has committed to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, with a further ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050, in line with the EU’s Green Deal and the Paris Agreement. ArcelorMittal has recently launched XCarb™, as part of the company’s journey to deliver on its 2050 net zero commitment. XCarb™ will ultimately bring together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon neutral steel.
