ArcelorMittal steel in Canada’s first stainless steel bridge

As the city of Toronto keeps expanding, accessibility and connectivity are becoming key topics. To ensure connection between downtown Toronto and the neighbourhood of Fort York, the Garrison Crossing, composed of two pedestrian and cycle bridges, was built with UR™ 2205 Duplex stainless steel from ArcelorMittal Industeel.

A design reminiscent of Yin & Yang

The Garrison Crossing is an unprecedented technical innovation in North America as Duplex stainless steel was used for the entire structure. The crossing has a unique design – realised by Pedelta – consisting of two Duplex stainless steel arch bridges crossing two railway corridors. Each bridge is supported by a single arch tilting in opposite direction, and the overall layout resembles a Yin & Yang shape to emphasise both contrast and continuity, expressing a modern and understated elegance. The innovative bridges are based on the company’s aesthetic philosophy of “Complex Simplicity”. The proposed design in stainless steel was awarded within a design and build project context competing against other bridge alternatives using carbon steel.

Stainless steel brings qualitative and economical benefits to customers

Industeel supplied 300 tonnes of URTM 2205 Duplex stainless steel plates (in thickness from 15 to 35 mm) from its mills of Charleroi (Belgium) and Le Creusot (France) with a very stringent surface quality requirement to steel fabricator Mariani Metal.

The design has been driven by utilising less material and energy, providing an extended life span and easy maintenance. The initial higher construction cost of stainless steel is offset by the extended lifecycle of the bridges that are more corrosion resistant, require low maintenance and last longer, which is reducing the overall cost of ownership. This represents a net advantage for the owner, in addition to improving safety and long-term durability.
