A major fishing port expansion programme in Egersund, Norway will be built using 2,200 tonnes of ArcelorMittal’s unique straight web steel sheet piles, manufactured in Belval, Luxembourg.
The containment structure, for food manufacturer Pelagia AS, will be created with our AS500 sheet piles and will eventually be used as a new quay wall as part of the port expansion. The circular cell structure of the straight web steel sheet piles was considered the most appropriate in this case, as it will collect the sand dredged from the seabed to cope with the increased vessel traffic. It will store it safely and avoid any pollution of the sea water by the sand.
To reduce the total carbon footprint of the project, the structure is being assembled using ArcelorMittal's new EcoSheetPile™ Plus range of sheet piling, made from 100% recycled steel and with 100% renewable electricity – part of ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range.
A success story for the client and for the environment
Pelagia AS is a leading producer of pelagic fish products for human consumption, and an important supplier of essential ingredients in all kinds of fish and animal feed. Located in one of Norway’s largest and most important fishing harbours, Pelagia Egersund Seafood has been a pioneer fish processing factory since 1993. A new fishing terminal is built to expand their operation in Egersund, based on circular cells structure that will be filled up with sand dredged from the seabed. The main contractor for this project is Vestbetong, while Fundamentering AS is the sheet piles driving contractor.
ArcelorMittal’s hot rolled steel sheet piles have been used to build maritime infrastructures for more than 100 years. Based on their long-term experience, steel structures in a marine environment can be designed for a service life of 50 years and even more.
A key differentiator that convinced the client to choose ArcelorMittal steel solution for this expansion project is the availability of the low carbon footprint EcoSheetPile™ Plus range. Made from 100% recycled steel (scrap) and exclusively with renewable electricity from wind and solar sources, these products are part of the XCarb® recycled and renewably produced range, that groups all the initiatives of ArcelorMittal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Certified by a specific Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), the production of the EcoSheetPiles™ Plus range emits as low as 370 kg CO2-eq./t of steel produced. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) shows that the embedded carbon footprint of EcoSheetPile™ Plus is one-fifth of that achieved by traditional products.
EcoSheetPile™ Plus as part of the XCarb™ initiative towards carbon neutral steel
Decarbonisation is one of the most important aspect of ArcelorMittal’s long-term strategy. For several years already, the EcoSheetPile™ range has been produced in Luxembourg via the Electric Arc Furnace route, from 100% recycled steel. ArcelorMittal steel sheet piles can also be reused up to 10 times, and thus are a major contributor to the circular economy.
Launched in 2021, the new EcoSheetPile™ Plus brand, essential part of ArcelorMittal’s XCarb™ initiative to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, goes one step further on the decarbonisation path: not only are these steel sheet piles produced from 100% recycled material, but the steelmaking process to produce them uses 100% renewable electricity from wind and solar sources connected to the same grid as our production mills.
